Open Mat – ‘Open mat’ is when we open the doors to our academy and let the students decide what they want to do with the mat area. During open mat you will see a lot of technique drilling, rolling, individual workouts, and more. There is no formal class during this time and you may roll GI or No-GI.
GI – What is a gi? A gi is similar to a kimono and is worn during Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu matches. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu it can be used as a weapon and is the foundation for many techniques and chokes. It has been shown that those who train with a GI develop such fine technique and awareness that their No-GI grappling accelerates by leaps and bounds.
No-GI – No-GI is a term used to described ‘rolling’ or sparring without the use of a gi. In No-Gi, you are not allowed to grab any part of your opponents clothing. No-Gi grappling techniques are used in Mixed-Martial-Arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and submission wrestling.
Rolling - ‘Rolling’ is a term used to describe a grappling sparring session. Generally, intensity varies between 80% and 100% of max exertion.
